Muay Thai fast spreading in Sri Lanka

Muay Thai is the latest of martial arts style using stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques, to take root in Sri Lanka. Likened to boxing where gloves and arm guards are used in practice and only the gloves during competition, Muay Thai first attracted local guy Miran Nilangana. The 40-year old took a liking to Muay Thai, which has its origin in Thailand, when he was in the USA in 1994. He went to the extent of representing the local league Vegas in domestic tournaments in a successful take off. As Nilangana puts it, “I beat every American I fought with except for the top guy there Michael Mananquil. Michael is the European champion of Muay Thai which is defined as Glory in that region. It is one of the three universal sectors that Muay Thai has found acceptance; the others being Japan K1 andKunlun in China.

This physical and mental discipline which includes combat on shins is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins, being associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient.Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.A professional league is governed by the World Muay Thai Council.

Back home, Nilangana lost no time in setting up the Thai art in Sri Lanka in 2014. It is Identified as the Muay Thai Sri Lanka Association (MTSLA) as the local branch of its parent body in the USA namely Muay Thai Association of America. Nilangana, who is the Managing Director of MTSLA, however, rather prefers to take a backseat in promoting the association and locals. The Chief Instructor is 37-year old Asoka Jayaratne who is currently on a membership building drive to popularise Muay Thai in Sri Lanka. There are branches in rural Colombo as well including Galle. The Sri Lankans did have the head of the US parent body grace the launching ceremony along with the Ambassador for Thailand in Sri Lanka

With their office centrally located just off Baudhaloka Mawatha, Colombo,
The expansion and success of the MTASL was the result of its International Coordinator and Director Miran Sit Ravana, Sri Lankan expat now residing in Los Angeles. With his 30 year experience in studying the art of Muay Thai and competing in International Tournaments, he is now the driving force in securing our Sri Lankan fighters the chance to compete internationally

Thai Boxing is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese army. Muay Thai is known as “King of the Ring” in kickboxing circles. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular endurance as well as the fighting spirit. Muay Thai training is also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights. Muay Thai has also proven very effective and useful outside the ring in self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities. (More info: http://muaythaiacademy.net/)
